Given the ongoing political instability in the Middle East and Asia, immigration to Turkey and Europe has increased sharply in recent years. This poses new challenges for many countries, especially with regard to the successful integration of migrants and refugees into society. Against this background, the project L@ngu@ges4all to create a solution for language support and social integration.
The key to successful integration lies in language acquisition. Mobile applications offer valuable educational resources that can be tailored specifically to immigrants, as many migrants are digitally savvy and interested in new opportunities in their host country. As part of this project, we have therefore developed a innovative language learning solution which enables refugees and immigrants to learn the local language and familiarise themselves with the cultural peculiarities of their new living environment.
Our mobile application is available for free download in the app stores and is aimed at immigrants in Turkey and European countries. The smartphone app L@ngu@ges4all offers refugees and immigrants the opportunity to learn the language of their host country before receiving a residence permit. Other immigrants who already live and work in their new home country also benefit from L@ngu@ges4all. The app supports a total of 6 target languages: Turkish, English, German, Czech, Italian and Bulgarian.
The L@ngu@ges4all app covers topics necessary for initial orientation in the new country. It contains an illustrated vocabulary for easier recognition and audiovisual content designed in an innovative way to encourage user motivation. The topics are country-specific and promote integration in each partner country. Our aim was to create a free basic language course to develop a content that is simple, entertaining and effective and can be marketed to end users using creative distribution strategies.
The database The app offers a variety of text documents, videos, images and audio files that can be used as needed. In addition, the database contains cultural worksheets with interactive questions and answers that expand knowledge about European countries and their cultures.
The
web portal
The app is supplemented by interactive exercises and can also be used without a smartphone. Users can track their learning progress, which increases their motivation. The exercises include written and audio-visual tasks as well as short films that depict everyday situations and are available in all six languages.
The audiovisual content are also available in six languages and are of high quality. They show everyday situations and help the target group to find their way around their new living environment. The videos are provided with subtitles that promote both the understanding and reading skills of the target group. The subtitles also enable people with hearing impairments to access the content and make the materials barrier-free. In addition, the videos present cultural customs and typical behavior in various European countries, which makes it easier for the target group to integrate.
All 5 project partners have extensive experience in implementing projects covering language and migration-related issues. Each partner brings a strong network of contacts and resources that contribute to the successful implementation and dissemination of the project.
The project L@ngu@ges4all offers a modern and accessible solution for language teaching and social integration of refugees and immigrants. By developing a user-friendly mobile app, a comprehensive web portal and high-quality audiovisual content, we were able to create an educational offer that effectively supports the target group in their new living environment, improves their language skills and promotes their cultural integration.
After the successful completion, the project was German National Agency thoroughly evaluated and achieved 87 points.
